A favorite dinner spot in Rehoboth Beach, The Big Fish Grill, was our dinner choice one cold Friday evening in March. Founded by two brothers, Eric and Norman Sugrue in 1997, Big Fish is so popular during the summer months that it is not unusual to have an hour or more wait to get a table.
Hours and Location
The restaurant is located on Route 1 at 20298 Coastal Highway, Rehoboth. It is actually just south of the turn to go into the beach town. The hours of operation are Sunday through Thursday from 11 AM to 9 PM. On Fridays and Saturdays, the restaurant is open from 11 AM until 9:30. Lunch is served Monday through Thursday from 11 AM until 3 PM and on Friday and Saturday from 11 AM until 4 PM.
Our Visit
Since it was the off-season, we didn’t have to wait at all for our table and were seated at a nice booth, although it is not unusual to even have to wait during the winter months. The tables are covered with white butcher paper and a cup of crayons is on the table, mostly for children, but adults have been known to decorate the paper as well.
They start you with a basket of saltines with their signature smoked tuna dip. We don’t particularly care for the dip, but others seem to really enjoy it. We ordered the Jalapeno Cream of Crab soup as an appetizer, and it was absolutely delicious. The spice was just right and the consistency of the soup was excellent with large chunks of crab.
We ordered the blackened mahi-mahi with tropical salsa for one meal. For the other, we chose the grilled yellowfin tuna, which was supposed to be served with a lobster sauce. We requested that the sauce be replaced with the tropical salsa since that is one of the restaurant’s specialties. We switched from the mashers that came with the tuna to a baked potato and added a side of cole slaw to the mahi mahi.
The tuna was perfectly cooked and was served with a generous helping of the salsa. The mahi mahi was also cooked perfectly, but we would have preferred it not be blackened as this seemed to take some of the flavor away from the fish. The cole slaw as very creamy and sweet as well.
For dessert, we shared the warm apple cobbler with cinnamon ice cream, which was absolutely delicious but very rich. The serving is far too much for one person and is almost enough for two people.
Tammi was our server and she was excellent at keeping our water and tea glasses filled. The food was delivered to the table quickly, despite the fact that they were busy. While visiting the bathroom, I overheard a conversation with a patron and a manager in which the customer was so impressed with the service of their waiter, she planned to return to the restaurant again just due to the service he provided to them.
Menu Prices
There is an extensive menu available at Big Fish Grill and they always have what they call “Blackboard Specials” because they are written in colorful chalk on large blackboards around the restaurant. Prices for entrée salads and sandwiches range from $10 to $20, while meals range from $17 to $32. Desserts are around $6 each. They also offer a raw bar and a full cocktail bar as well.
We will return to Big Fish Grill as we have never had a bad meal there and this trip was no exception. We highly recommend the Big Fish Grill for their exceptional service and delicious food.
